About Alaska State Museum
The Alaska State Museum was established in 1900 to gather the human and natural history of the then-territory. It operates in downtown Juneau in a building that also houses the state library and archives, named for Father Andrew P. Kashevaroff, the museum’s first curator.
The native cultures collection covers all regions of Alaska: Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian objects from the Southeast coast, such as chilkat robes, hats and carvings; Athabascan pieces from the interior; and clothing, tools and kayaks of the Inupiat, Yupik, Alutiiq and Unangax peoples. The way exhibits are presented gives voice to the originating communities.
Other galleries address the period when Alaska belonged to Russia, the purchase by the United States in 1867, the gold rushes, life in the territory and the creation of the state in 1959. There is also natural history, with animals of the state’s fauna, and an art gallery with temporary exhibitions.
The museum is a few blocks from the Alaska Capitol and the cruise ship pier, and pairs well with a walk through downtown.
