About Mackinac Bridge
The Mackinac Bridge, opened in 1957, connects Mackinaw City to St. Ignace across the strait that links Lakes Michigan and Huron. With roughly 8 km total length and a central suspended span between two towers about 168 meters above the water, it is one of the world’s longest suspension bridges.
Before the bridge, the crossing between Michigan’s Lower and Upper Peninsulas was done by car ferries, often causing long queues during hunting season. Nicknamed the Mighty Mac, the bridge is painted green and ivory and is usually lit at night.
The most open views are from the waterfront parks in Mackinaw City under the southern end of the bridge and from the overlook in St. Ignace on the northern side. The vehicle crossing has a toll, and on Labor Day the bridge is opened to pedestrians for an annual walk.
