at your own pace.

The Mackinac Strait separates Michigan’s two peninsulas and connects Lakes Michigan and Huron. In the middle of the strait sits Mackinac Island, where motor vehicles have been banned since 1898: people get around on foot, by bicycle, or by horse-drawn carriage, and the sound of horses’ hooves is part of the atmosphere.

About 80% of the island is a state park, with forest trails, limestone formations like Arch Rock, and a roughly 13 km road around the shoreline that’s good for cycling. Atop the bluff, Fort Mackinac, built by the British in 1780, features reenactors in period dress and cannon firings. On Main Street, fudge shops—making a sweet of sugar, butter, and chocolate—have been a tradition since the late 19th century.

On the mainland side, Mackinaw City is the ferry departure point and has Colonial Michilimackinac, a reconstructed 18th-century fort and fur-trading post excavated on site, and the Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse. The Mackinac Bridge, opened in 1957, spans the strait for about 8 km to St. Ignace on the Upper Peninsula.

Before you go

Practical information

A little planning leaves more time to enjoy the journey.

When to go

From May to October, when ferries run frequently and attractions are generally open; June through August is the busiest period, and the Lilac Festival in June fills the island. From November to April most things close and access to the mainland is limited.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

How many days to stay

Two days: one on Mackinac Island to see the fort, Arch Rock, and cycle around, and another in Mackinaw City for Colonial Michilimackinac and views of the bridge. If you want to see the island quiet, stay overnight after the last ferry.

Which city to stay in

On Mackinac Island accommodations are in the downtown area near the docks or up on the higher hills; at night, without day visitors, the island becomes peaceful. Mackinaw City has more options and a range of prices near the docks and the bridge. St. Ignace, on the other side of the bridge, also has ferries to the island.
