About Mackinac Island State Park

Mackinac Island State Park was created in 1895 and, from 1875 to 1895, the island served as the United States’ second national park. It covers about 80% of the island, with maple and cedar forests, limestone cliffs and dozens of kilometers of car-free trails and roads.

M-185, about 13 km long, circles the entire coast and is the only state highway in the United States without motor vehicles, traveled by bicycle, on foot or by carriage. Along the way are Arch Rock, the pebble beach at British Landing and formations like the Devil’s Kitchen.

Inland, Fort Holmes occupies the island’s highest point with views of the strait, and formations like the Sugar Loaf appear among the trees.
