About Fort Mackinac
Fort Mackinac was erected by the British beginning in 1780, during the American Revolutionary War, on the limestone bluff overlooking Mackinac Island’s harbor. It passed to the United States in 1796, was captured by the British in the War of 1812 and returned later, and housed soldiers until 1895.
Stone walls enclose 14 original buildings, such as barracks, the commander’s house, and the powder magazine, with exhibits on the lives of soldiers and their families. Throughout the day, interpreters in period uniforms perform cannon and musket firings and demonstrate military routine.
From the top of the walls, the view includes the harbor, Main Street, and the Mackinac Strait. Admission includes the historic downtown houses, like the blacksmith shop and the fur trade museum.
