About Rainbow Falls
Rainbow Falls, called in Hawaiian Waiānuenue, “water of the rainbow,” is in Wailuku River State Park within Hilo’s urban area. The river drops about 24 meters into a wide basin surrounded by banyan trees, ferns and gingers.
Behind the falls is a grotto formed in an old lava flow. According to Hawaiian tradition, Hina, mother of the demigod Maui, lived there. The viewpoint, a few steps from the parking area, faces the waterfall, and a staircase leads to a higher spot next to a banyan tree.
The name comes from the rainbows that often appear in the mist when the morning sun hits the water. The waterfall’s flow varies a lot: after rainy days, common in Hilo, the falls become wide and muddy; in drier periods it diminishes.
About 2 km upstream in the same park are the Boiling Pots, a series of pools where the water seems to boil as it passes between lava rocks. Swimming in either place is not allowed.
