Huntsville is in northern Alabama, in the Tennessee River valley, at the foot of the last rises of the Appalachian Mountains. It was a cotton town until the 1950s, when the Army and later NASA established the center where rockets for the American space program were designed.

The team of engineers led by Wernher von Braun developed the Saturn V in Huntsville, the rocket that took astronauts to the Moon. The city earned the nickname Rocket City and still depends on space and defense research, with NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center located there.

The U.S. Space & Rocket Center is the main attraction: a museum with a complete Saturn V suspended inside a hall and an outdoor rocket park. It is also the home of Space Camp, training camps for young people and adults.

The historic center has Big Spring Park, the old houses in the Twickenham district and the site where Alabama’s first constitution was written, in 1819. To the east, Monte Sano State Park has trails and viewpoints over the valley.
