About San Jacinto Monument

The San Jacinto Monument stands on the battlefield of April 21, 1836, where Sam Houston’s Texas army defeated General Santa Anna’s Mexican troops in about 18 minutes, securing Texas independence. It lies east of Houston along the ship channel.

The column, built in the 1930s, is 173 meters tall and is crowned by a 34-ton star, a symbol of Texas. At the base, a museum tells the history of Texas, from Spanish colonization to the independent republic, and an elevator takes visitors up to the observation deck, with views of the battlefield, the channel and the refineries.

The battlefield is a state historic site, with trails, interpretive signs and a reflecting pool in front of the monument.
