About Garvan Woodland Gardens
Garvan Woodland Gardens cover about 85 hectares on a peninsula of Lake Hamilton, south of Hot Springs. The land was donated to the University of Arkansas by Verna Cook Garvan, who spent decades planting there, and it is maintained as a botanical garden.
Paths cross pine and oak woodlands, with azaleas, camellias and tulips in spring, creeks and waterfalls. There is a Japanese garden with a red bridge, a children’s area with a treehouse and wooden bridges along the slope.
Anthony Chapel, a wooden-and-glass chapel erected among the trees, follows the region’s organic architectural style, inspired by the school of Fay Jones, designer of Thorncrown Chapel in Eureka Springs.
At the end of the year the gardens usually host a nighttime light festival that requires a separate ticket.
