About Lanikai Beach

Lanikai is a residential neighborhood south of Kailua, separated from it by a hill. The beach, about 800 meters long, lies between the houses and the sea, with access through narrow public paths off Mokulua Drive. There are no restrooms, showers, kiosks or lifeguards.

A reef close to shore keeps the water shallow and generally calm, in a turquoise color, good for swimming and paddling. Offshore are the Mokulua islets (Nā Mokulua), two islands that serve as seabird refuges. Kayaks may land only on the larger islet, Moku Nui, and only in designated spots; the smaller islet, Moku Iki, is closed.

The name Lanikai was created in the 1920s by the area’s developer; before that the place was known as Kaʻōhao. Erosion has narrowed the sand in several spots, and at high tide little beach remains.

On the ridge between Lanikai and Waimānalo, the Kaʻiwa Ridge trail climbs to old concrete military bunkers with views of the beach and the islets.
