About Hanauma Bay

Hanauma Bay occupies the crater of a tuff cone formed tens of thousands of years ago. Over time the sea breached the southeast rim and flooded the interior, creating an almost circular bay protected from waves by a reef across the entrance.

Heavy fishing and large numbers of visitors nearly destroyed marine life during the 20th century. In 1967 the bay became a marine protected area, and fishing has been prohibited since then. The shallow reef, just a few meters from the sand, shelters about 400 fish species, as well as green turtles, which must not be touched or chased.

The reserve limits the number of daily visitors. Before descending to the beach, everyone watches a short video about protecting the corals and animals. From the visitor center at the top of the crater you walk down a steep ramp or take a tram to the sand.

The reserve is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays to allow the reef to rest. Out-of-state visitors pay an entrance fee and must reserve online, with two days’ notice.
