About Lake Powell and Glen Canyon Dam
Glen Canyon Dam was completed in 1964 on the Colorado River at Page, creating Lake Powell, one of the largest reservoirs in the United States, which extends through canyons of Arizona and Utah. The lake has the deep blue color of deep water and red sandstone shores, with hundreds of side canyons.
At the Carl Hayden Visitor Center next to the dam, exhibits explain the construction and the geology, and large windows look out over the canyon wall and the bridge spanning the canyon. Guided tours descend to the dam crest; spaces are limited and security screening is required.
On the lake, Wahweap Marina, a few kilometers from Page, is the departure point for boat trips, boat and kayak rentals, and excursions that, depending on the water level, reach Rainbow Bridge, one of the largest natural stone bridges in the world and sacred to the Navajo. Overlooks along the roads around the area, such as the Wahweap overlook, provide views of the lake from above.
The lake level varies greatly with droughts and river water use, which changes ramps and available boat routes.
