About Painted Desert Inn
The Painted Desert Inn is an adobe pueblo-style building on the edge of a Painted Desert overlook in the north of Petrified Forest National Park. It began as a private inn in the 1920s and was remodeled in the 1930s by a federal jobs program.
In the 1940s, the company that ran restaurants at western train stations took over the building, and in 1948 Hopi artist Fred Kabotie painted murals on the walls of the main room, depicting scenes of Hopi life and traditions. The murals are a highlight of the visit.
Today the building is a museum and National Historic Landmark, with exhibits about its history and about Route 66, which ran nearby. From the terrace, the overlook shows Painted Desert hills in red and orange.
