About Walnut Canyon
Walnut Canyon is a limestone canyon about 15 km east of Flagstaff, protected as a national monument. Between roughly 1100 and 1250, the Sinagua, an agricultural people of the region, built dozens of dwellings beneath rock overhangs, taking advantage of softer rock layers carved by erosion.
The Island Trail descends about 56 meters via stairs from the visitor center and circles a rock island in the middle of the canyon, passing alongside 25 of these dwellings, some with walls still standing. The route is about 1.5 km, but the climb back up—at over 2,000 meters elevation—requires stamina.
The Rim Trail, which is flat, follows the canyon edge with overlooks of the canyon and the ruins of a surface house. The visitor center has a small exhibit showing artifacts and explaining how the Sinagua lived.
The Island Trail may close on days with snow or ice in winter; check the monument’s website.
