About Pioneer Park
Pioneer Park was created in 1967 for the 100th anniversary of the Alaska Purchase by the United States. It gathers log cabins and old Fairbanks buildings along the Chena River that were moved there and now house shops and small museums.
The highlight is the Nenana, a sternwheel steamboat that plied Alaska’s interior rivers until the 1950s and has been restored. Other buildings tell the story of the gold rush and aviation in Alaska, with old planes in a dedicated museum, and of the railway.
The park does not charge to stroll through, and several museums and the steamboat have their own hours, longer in summer. In winter, many attractions close, but the park hosts ice sculpture events and there are cross-country ski areas nearby.
