About Michigan Central Station
Michigan Central Station opened in 1913 in Corktown, west of downtown, designed by the same firms that created New York’s Grand Central. The building features a concourse styled like Roman baths, with columns and vaults, and an 18-story office tower.
After passenger rail service ended in 1988, the station was abandoned for three decades and became a symbol of the city’s decline. In 2018 Ford purchased the building and carried out a full restoration, which recovered plaster ceilings, floors and Guastavino tile mosaics.
The main concourse is often open to the public when there are no events, and there are ticketed guided tours that show other halls and tell the story of the restoration.
