About Eastern Market

Eastern Market has operated in the same location, northeast of downtown, since the late 19th century and is one of the largest public markets in the United States. The iron-and-brick sheds host producers of fruits, vegetables, cheeses, meats and flowers from Michigan and neighboring states.

The main day is Saturday, when stalls fill the sheds and the streets are busy. Around the market, old warehouses have become butcher shops, bakeries, cafés and breweries, and many neighborhood walls are covered by murals from the Murals in the Market festival.

In spring, Flower Day gathers sellers of seedlings and flowers, and at year’s end there are Christmas markets on some weekends.
