About Delta Blues Museum

The Delta Blues Museum was founded in 1979 and is the oldest music museum in Mississippi. Since 1999 it has occupied the old railroad freight depot, a brick building in downtown Clarksdale, near where trains carried cotton and musicians north.

The exhibits tell the story of the blues’ origins on Delta farms and display guitars, harmonicas, stage clothes, photographs and posters of regional musicians, from Charley Patton and Son House to B.B. King. There are items related to Robert Johnson, Howlin' Wolf and John Lee Hooker.

In a dedicated wing, the museum reconstructed the wooden shack where Muddy Waters lived and worked on the Stovall farm, on the outskirts of Clarksdale, before leaving for Chicago and electrifying the blues.

The museum has a stage used at festivals and a music lessons program for youth in the town.
