About Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum opened in 1995 in a glass-and-concrete building designed by I. M. Pei, featuring a glass pyramid facing Lake Erie. Cleveland won the museum because it was the city where radio host Alan Freed helped popularize the term rock and roll and where the 1952 Moondog Coronation Ball took place, considered one of the first major rock shows.

The multi-level exhibits display guitars, stage costumes, lyric manuscripts and artifacts from artists such as Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, the Beatles, Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan and Prince. There are theater rooms with concert films, areas to try instruments and the Hall of Fame gallery with inductees’ signatures.

Temporary exhibitions focus on specific genres and artists. Outside, the lakeside plaza offers views of the harbor and the stadium.
