About Pilgrim Monument

The Pilgrim Monument was built between 1907 and 1910 to mark the Mayflower pilgrims’ first stop in North America in November 1620, in Provincetown Harbor, where the Mayflower Compact was signed. At about 77 meters, it is the tallest all‑granite structure in the United States and was inspired by a medieval tower in Siena, Italy.

The ascent is inside the tower via ramps and stairs, with no elevator. At the top, windows on all four sides show the village, the harbor, the dunes of the Province Lands, Cape Cod Bay and, on clear days, the Boston coastline in the distance.

At the foot of the tower, the Provincetown Museum tells the village’s story: the arrival of the pilgrims, fishing, the artists’ colony, the experimental theater of the early 20th century and the LGBTQ+ community that made the town famous.

The complex sits atop High Pole Hill, above Bradford Street. An inclined external elevator helps overcome the slope between the street and the tower base.
