About Big Bend Ranch State Park
Big Bend Ranch State Park is the largest state park in Texas, with about 1,200 km² of desert, mountains and canyons west of Big Bend National Park. It was a large cattle ranch before the state purchased it in the 1980s.
The most visited section is the River Road, FM-170, between Lajitas and Presidio, an approximately 80 km road that follows the Rio Grande between rock cliffs. There are viewpoints, short trails like the Closed Canyon, a narrow canyon with high walls, and picnic spots on the riverbank.
The park interior has dirt roads that require a high-clearance vehicle, campgrounds and long trails. The Barton Warnock visitor center in Lajitas has exhibits and a desert plant garden.
