About Chinati Foundation

The Chinati Foundation was created by the artist Donald Judd in 1986 in a former army fort, Fort D. A. Russell, south of Marfa. The idea was to exhibit large-scale works permanently, each in a space designed for it, rather than the temporary exhibitions typical of museums.

Among the best-known works are Judd’s 100 aluminum boxes lined up in two former artillery sheds with windows onto the desert, and the 15 concrete works arranged in the field. Other buildings house installations by artists such as Dan Flavin, with fluorescent light, and John Chamberlain.

Visits are guided, with set times and days, and cover several buildings on foot. The desert light that enters the sheds changes the appearance of the works throughout the day.
