About Marfa Lights Viewing Area

The Marfa Lights are points of light that some people report seeing at night on the horizon east of town, toward the Chinati Mountains. Accounts of them date back to the late 19th century, and explanations range from car headlight reflections to atmospheric phenomena, with no definitive conclusion.

The observation area, built by the state on the edge of US-90, has parking, restrooms and a platform facing the desert, with panels about the lights’ history. At dusk, locals and visitors gather there with binoculars.

Not every night offers something to see, and often the lights are mistaken for headlights on a distant road. The site is also worth visiting for the dark sky, with many stars. In September, the town holds a festival related to the lights.
