About Museum of the Big Bend
The Museum of the Big Bend is located on the Sul Ross State University campus in Alpine and was established in the 1930s. It is the main museum about the Big Bend region, covering indigenous peoples to Spanish and Mexican settlers, cowboys, mining and railroads.
Permanent exhibits address border life, with ranch artifacts, saddles, weapons and historic photographs. A paleontology room displays fossils found in the region, including remains of a giant pterosaur, Quetzalcoatlus, discovered in Big Bend National Park.
The museum hosts temporary art and photography exhibitions of the West and an annual event for Western artists. It’s a good starting point to understand the region before heading to the parks.
