About Walters Art Museum
The Walters Art Museum grew from the collection of William and Henry Walters, father and son, Baltimore businessmen who assembled artworks from various periods at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. Henry bequeathed the collection and the building to the city in 1931.
The holdings span millennia: Egyptian, Greek and Roman art, illuminated manuscripts and medieval ivories, armor, Asian ceramics, Renaissance and Baroque paintings and 19th-century French works. One room recreates a 17th-century cabinet of curiosities.
The museum occupies three interconnected buildings, including a 19th-century mansion facing Mount Vernon Place. There stands Baltimore’s George Washington Monument, a column begun in 1815, older than the capital’s obelisk.
There is no charge for entry to the permanent collections; temporary exhibitions may have their own ticket.
