About National Aquarium
The National Aquarium opened in 1981 at Pier 3 of the Inner Harbor and is one of the most visited aquariums in the United States. The building, with its glass pyramid roof, became known as a symbol of the harbor’s revitalization.
The route rises via ramps and escalators among tanks that display life from the Chesapeake Bay, the Atlantic and other regions. A highlight is the circular coral reef tank, with rays and sharks visible from multiple levels.
Above, under the pyramid, a rainforest houses birds, marmosets, sloths and plants from South America. Another wing reproduces an Australian gorge, with waterfalls, birds and reptiles, and there are exhibits of jellyfish and dolphins.
The visit follows a one-way route and is usually busy on weekends. The aquarium is open year-round, with hours that change by season.
