About Inner Harbor
The Inner Harbor is the basin of Baltimore’s port, adjacent to the city center. During the 19th century and much of the 20th, it was a district of warehouses and cargo piers; in the 1970s the city began transforming it into a waterfront promenade with boardwalks, plazas and museums, a model copied by other port cities.
Moored at the pier are ships that now function as museums, such as the USS Constellation, a 1854 sloop-of-war, the submarine USS Torsk and the Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse, which previously stood in the bay. Around them are the National Aquarium, the Maryland Science Center and the Harbor East area.
The boardwalk follows the water and links downtown to Fells Point and Canton, and the water taxi makes stops at the neighborhoods and Fort McHenry. From Federal Hill Park, a hill to the south, you get the widest view of the harbor and the downtown buildings.
In summer there are pedal boat rentals and outdoor performances in the waterfront plazas.
