About Fell's Point
Fells Point was founded in the 18th century as a settlement of shipyards and sailors, east of downtown Baltimore. In the 19th century the neighborhood built fast sailing ships, the Baltimore clippers, and received immigrants who landed at the port.
Thames and Broadway streets, paved with cobblestones, retain two- and three-story brick houses, old warehouses and taverns. In the middle of Broadway, the Broadway Market is a covered market from 1786, one of the city's oldest.
Fells Point’s pier, with its waterfront square, is a stop for the water taxi and the starting point for walking tours about the neighborhood's history, including that of Frederick Douglass, who worked there in the shipyards when he was still enslaved. The Frederick Douglass–Isaac Myers Museum, by the pier, tells that story.
At night, the neighborhood is known for its bars and restaurants, and Thames Street is busy on weekends.
