About United States Naval Academy
The United States Naval Academy was founded in 1845 in Annapolis on the banks of the Severn River and trains officers for the Navy and the Marine Corps. The campus, called the Yard, mixes early-20th-century granite buildings, lawns, and piers.
The visit begins at the Armel-Leftwich Visitor Center, next to the pedestrian gate, with a short film about midshipmen life. Guided tours, paid separately, go through the chapel with its copper dome and the crypt housing the tomb of John Paul Jones, the naval hero of independence, as well as Bancroft Hall, the large dormitory for students, and the campus monuments.
The Academy museum, in Preble Hall, has a gallery of ship models from the 17th and 18th centuries and objects from the country’s naval history.
Entry is controlled: visitors aged 18 and over must show photo ID, and non-U.S. citizens use a passport. For security reasons, public access can be temporarily suspended.
