About Alaska SeaLife Center
The Alaska SeaLife Center opened in 1998 in downtown Seward on the shore of Resurrection Bay. It was built with funds from the settlement for the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill and combines a public aquarium, research on Alaska’s marine ecosystems and rehabilitation of animals.
The larger tanks have windows above and below the waterline, where you can see Steller sea lions and seals swimming. A sea-coast exhibit reproduces a rocky shore with seabirds such as puffins and eiders that dive in front of visitors. Other tanks display giant Pacific octopuses, fish, crabs and intertidal animals.
The center is the only facility in Alaska authorized to rescue and rehabilitate marine mammals, such as seal pups and sea otters found injured or orphaned. Part of this work can be seen through windows and in presentations.
There are paid behind-the-scenes programs and animal encounters.
