About Mount Alyeska
Mount Alyeska sits above the village of Girdwood, about 60 km from Anchorage, and hosts Alaska’s largest ski area. The summit reaches roughly 1,200 meters, and the runs descend nearly to sea level, with a vertical drop of about 975 meters. Snow is abundant: at the top, the annual average exceeds 16 meters.
A tramway rises from the base, near the village, to a station about three quarters of the way up the mountain, with a restaurant and viewpoints. From the top you can see the Girdwood valley, seven hanging glaciers in the Chugach Mountains and the waters of the Turnagain Arm. Nearby is the Roundhouse, the old octagonal skier shelter from the 1960s, now a small museum of local ski history.
In winter, the resort has runs for various levels and offers night skiing on some days of the season. In summer the tramway operates for sightseers, and the North Face trail climbs on foot up the slope to the upper station, with about 600 meters of elevation gain.
In the village at the mountain’s base there are restaurants, equipment rental shops and trails in the valley’s temperate rainforest.
