About San Simon Bay
Saint Simon’s Cove (Simonov zaliv) lies west of Izola’s center, about 1.5 km away. It has a bathing area with lawn, a pier and sea access via rocks and steps, in a sheltered bay with calm water.
The cove has an ancient history. On the promontory and on the seabed nearby are remains of Haliaetum, the Roman port and settlement that existed in the region from the 2nd century BCE, with remains of quays and a villa. Part of the port structures can be seen underwater near the shore on calm days.
Izola, next door, was originally an island, connected to the mainland at the start of the 19th century; the name comes from the Italian isola, island. The center has narrow streets, the Church of Saint Maurus on the hill and an active fishing port, with seafood restaurants along the waterfront.
From the cove, a shore path and the Parenzana lead to Izola’s center and, in the other direction, to Strunjan.
