Approximate distances. Check flights and bus, train or boat schedules before you travel.
There is no train to the town: the nearest stations are in Krško and Brežice, about 20 km away in the Sava valley. By car you reach it via the A2 motorway, with an exit for Kostanjevica, or by roads from Novo mesto, about 30 km. Zagreb Airport is roughly 55 km away.
How many days
Half a day is enough for the island, the gallery and the sculpture park. With the cave and the Pleterje Carthusian monastery, allow a full day.
When to go
From mid-spring to October, when the cave receives visitors and the sculpture park is more pleasant. At Forma Viva, which takes place every two years in summer, sculptors work in public view.
The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.
Do you need a car?
No. The town is off the train lines and has few buses. With a car it pairs easily with Pleterje, 10 km away, and with Novo mesto.
