About Jeruzalem (Ljutomersko‑Ormoške Gorice)
Jeruzalem is a small village on the wine-covered hills between Ljutomer and Ormož in northeastern Slovenia, about 35 km from Ptuj. It already lies in the neighboring Pomurska region at some 340 m altitude, amid slopes covered with terraced vineyards, poplars and scattered wine cellars.
The name comes from a tradition linked to the crusaders: in the 13th century the area was granted to a crusader order which, according to legend, brought from Jerusalem a painting of the Virgin for the chapel. The present pilgrimage church, dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, developed from a 1652 chapel and dominates the village.
The hills of Ljutomer and Ormož are known for white wines such as šipon, laški rizling and sauvignon. In the vineyards you can see klopotec, wooden wind-driven devices with hammers that beat in the wind to scare birds away from the bunches. Narrow roads and marked trails connect the villages and viewpoints, and several estates welcome visitors for tastings, paid separately.
