The city
A town of about 18,000 on the Drava, considered the oldest with a written record in Slovenia. It was the Roman Poetovio, which received city status from Emperor Trajan in the year 103. The castle on the hill houses the regional museum; on Slovenski trg stands the Orfejev spomenik, a Roman tombstone nearly 5 meters tall. At the end of winter the town hosts the Kurentovanje carnival.

The local experience
Castle on the hill above the Drava, with the regional museum of Ptuj–Ormož: furnished halls, an armory, 17th‑century Turquerie paintings, carnival masks and the largest collection of historical musical instruments in Slovenia.
A 2nd‑century Roman tombstone of Pohorje marble, nearly 5 meters tall, on Slovenski trg. The reliefs with the myth of Orpheus gave the monument its name, symbol of Ptuj.
Gothic basilica from the early 15th century on top of a hill about 14 km from Ptuj, featuring the Relief of the Virgin of the Mantle, which shelters 82 figures of people from the period beneath the cloak.
A village on top of the wine-covered hills between Ljutomer and Ormož, with the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows and terraced vineyard slopes known for white wines such as šipon.
