About Basilica of Ptujska Gora
The Basilica of Ptujska Gora stands atop a hill southwest of Ptuj, on the edge of the Drava plain, near the Haloze hills. The pilgrimage church was built around 1400 and is one of Slovenia’s main Gothic ensembles, with three naves and ribbed vaults. In 2010, on its 600th anniversary, it received the title of minor basilica.
The centerpiece of a visit is the Relief of the Virgin of the Mantle, carved around 1410 from a single block of stone and placed on the high altar in the 18th century. Mary, holding the Child, opens her cloak over a group of 82 people—nobles, clergy and common folk—depicted in the clothing and with the faces of the time. The image is considered a rare testimony to how the region’s inhabitants dressed and presented themselves in the early 15th century.
According to tradition, the church was attacked several times during Ottoman incursions and was repeatedly rebuilt. The small village that grew up around it formed after the sanctuary was constructed. From the churchyard you can see across the Drava plain.

It is about 14 km from Ptuj by road, in the municipality of Majšperk. Without a car, access is difficult: public transport to the village is sparse.
