How many days
One day covers the old town, Prešeren’s house, the Church of St. Cantianus tower, the tunnel visit and the gorge trail. The town is also a practical starting point for Škofja Loka, Bled and Ljubljana.
When to go
From May to October, when the Kokra gorge trail is more pleasant and there are events in the center. On February 8, Prešeren Day and the national Culture Day holiday, the town hosts the country’s largest celebration. The tunnels remain around 10 °C year-round.
The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.
Do you need a car?
No. The old center is small and the train station is nearby. Buses link Kranj to the airport and neighboring towns. A car only helps for excursions into the valleys and mountains of Gorenjska.

-
Morning
Prešeren’s house and the Church of St. Cantianus
Start at Glavni trg square and the Church of St. Cantianus; if the tower is open, climb the lookout. Follow Prešernova Street to the poet’s house and visit the museum. Then walk to Prešeren Forest, where he is buried.
-
Afternoon
Tunnels and the Kokra gorge
Take the guided tour of the tunnels beneath the old town, and bring a jacket because it’s cold inside. Then descend to the Kokra gorge and follow the roughly 2 km circular trail, which runs beneath the houses on the promontory.
Check before you go. Opening hours and days change, and places may close for renovations, holidays or events. This itinerary is a suggestion from Cidade Turismo, not a commitment: plan yours by checking directly with each place you intend to visit.
