About Transalpina Square
Trg Evrope, the Square of Europe, called in Italian Piazza della Transalpina, stands in front of Nova Gorica railway station and is divided in half between Slovenia and Italy. The station was built by Austria-Hungary and opened in 1906 with the Bohinj line, the Transalpina, as Gorizia’s station.
With the 1947 peace treaty, the border between Italy and Yugoslavia ran exactly in front of the building, which remained on the Yugoslav side while Gorizia stayed in Italy. For decades a fence and later a low wall separated the square. When Slovenia joined the European Union in 2004, the barrier was removed and the square was refurbished as a shared space, with the border line marked on the ground.
Today you can walk from one country to the other, and the square is a meeting point for the two towns, hosting outdoor cultural events. The station retains its historic 1906 building, still in use by trains on the Bohinj line.
