The city
City of about 13,000 people on the Italian border, built from 1948 after the peace treaty left Gorizia in Italy. It and Gorizia form a single urban area, joined by Trg Evrope square. Around it are the Kostanjevica Monastery, with the Bourbon tombs, the basilica of Sveta Gora and, in the Solkan suburb, the stone railway bridge over the Soča.

Square in front of Nova Gorica railway station, split between Slovenia and Italy. The closed border used to pass through it after 1947; today you cross freely between the two towns.
