About Sveta Gora
Sveta Gora, the holy mountain, is a 682-meter hill north of Nova Gorica, above the Soča valley, on the summit of Skalnica. It has been a pilgrimage site for about 450 years, with a basilica dedicated to Mary, Queen of Sveta Gora, tended by Franciscan friars. According to tradition, Mary appeared to a shepherdess in the 16th century and asked that a church be built there.
The sanctuary was destroyed and rebuilt several times. In 1917, during the Isonzo battles, the summit was the scene of heavy fighting between the Austro-Hungarian and Italian armies, and the church was left in ruins. The current basilica was rebuilt and consecrated in 1928. Beside it, a museum presents the history of the Isonzo front in this area, and the paths around pass by trenches and war caves.
From the top, on clear days, the view often reaches Istria, the Venice lagoon, the Dolomites and the Julian Alps, as well as Gorizia, Nova Gorica and the course of the Soča just below. A paved road climbs to the sanctuary, and waymarked trails connect Solkan to the summit.
