About English Mountain (Gebel el-Ingleez)
English Mountain (Gebel el-Ingleez) is an isolated hill near Bawiti in the Bahariya Oasis. At the top are the ruins of a British guard post from World War I, when the area was watched for incursions from Libya.
The climb is short and leads to a view over the oasis — palm trees and fields — and the dark hills and desert around it. Locals point to this spot as the place to watch the sun set over the oasis.
English Mountain is commonly included in half-day oasis tours, together with the hot springs and the date fields.
At the foot of the hill are date palm groves and some of the oasis springs, and tours often proceed from there to a hot-water bath.
