How many days
One day, chosen according to the tide table, is enough to see the pororoca pass in front of town. With two days you can see the wave more than once and follow the movement of boats and surfers.
When to go
The big wave tends to appear in the first half of the year, when the rivers are full, on sizygies — new or full moons. March and April usually bring the largest waves, and the festival generally falls in that period. The climate is hot and humid year-round, with more rain in the first half of the year.
The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.
Do you need a car?
Not within the town: the waterfront and downtown are a few steps apart. By car it’s easier to make a same-day trip from Belém without depending on bus schedules.

Frequently asked questions
From which point in town can you see the pororoca?
On the Capim riverbank, in front of town, near the meeting with the Guamá. Ask locals for the predicted tide time that day.
Does the pororoca happen every day?
The tide rises the river twice a day, but a strong wave depends on sizygies — new or full moons — and river volume, greater between January and May.
How big is the pororoca wave on the Capim River?
It generally stays below two meters, smaller than on some other rivers, but it travels long distances upriver. Height varies with the tide and river volume.
Can you do a same-day trip from Belém to São Domingos do Capim?
Yes, it’s about 140 km. Choose the day using the tide table and leave early to arrive before the wave passes.
