St. George’s sits on the far eastern end of Bermuda, in a sheltered cove of St. George’s Harbour. It was founded in 1612, three years after the wreck of the Sea Venture, a ship carrying English colonists bound for Virginia that struck the island’s reefs. It was the capital until 1815, when the government moved to Hamilton.

In 2000, UNESCO inscribed the town and the fortifications that protect it as a World Heritage Site. Narrow streets with names like Featherbed Alley and Shinbone Alley run past whitewashed, stepped-roof houses, King’s Square, St. Peter’s Church, in use since the colony’s early years, and the ruins of the Unfinished Church.

Outside the center, the north and east coasts are defined by forts that defended the harbour entrance, from Fort St. Catherine to Gates Fort, and by shallow-water coves such as Tobacco Bay. Across the harbour, St. David’s Island is home to an 1879 lighthouse, the Cooper’s Island nature reserve and the beaches of Clearwater.

L.F. Wade International Airport lies between St. George’s and St. David’s, a few kilometers from the town.

Before you go

Practical information

A little planning leaves more time to enjoy the journey.

When to go

From May to October the sea is warmer for swimming at Tobacco Bay and Clearwater, and in summer a ferry links the town with the Royal Naval Dockyard; hurricane season runs from June to November. From November to April, milder air and fewer visitors make walking the streets and forts more pleasant.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.
