About Fort Hamilton
Fort Hamilton was built by the British in the second half of the 19th century on a hill at the city’s eastern edge to protect Hamilton from a land attack. It was never used in combat.
The fort is surrounded by a dry moat with stone walls that has been turned into a garden with tropical plants, bamboo and palm trees. Tunnels and passages link the moat to the former gun positions, and some cannons remain atop the ramparts.
After about two years closed for restoration work and archaeological research, the fort reopened in March 2026 with a covered terrace for the public. From the top you can see central Hamilton, the harbor and the islands of the Great Sound, and the site is popular for watching the sunset.
