About Tlaxcala Government Palace (Palacio de Gobierno de Tlaxcala)
The Government Palace occupies the north side of the Plaza de la Constitución in downtown Tlaxcala, in a colonial-era building with an arcade façade and brick details. It houses the state government and is open to visitors on the ground floor and the stairways.
The interior walls are covered with murals painted over several decades by Tlaxcalan artist Desiderio Hernández Xochitiotzin. The scenes depict the region’s history, from pre-Hispanic peoples and maize cultivation to the alliance with the Spaniards and the city’s founding.
In front of it, the plaza has gardens, a bandstand, the Santa Cruz fountain and arcades with cafés, and nearby stands the parish of San José.
