About Franciscan Conventual and Cathedral Complex of Our Lady of the Assumption (Convent Complex of Tlaxcala)
The Franciscan convent complex and the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption sit on a hillside in the center of Tlaxcala and were built beginning in the 1530s, making it one of the continent’s earliest convents. In 2021, UNESCO inscribed it as part of the early 16th-century monasteries on the slopes of Popocatépetl.
You arrive via a tree-lined stone ramp that climbs to the atrium. The bell tower stands apart from the church, and the single nave has a wooden mudéjar-style ceiling with geometric patterns, a rare feature in Mexico. The church serves as the cathedral of the Diocese of Tlaxcala.
The old cloister houses the Regional Museum of Tlaxcala, run by INAH, with pre-Hispanic and colonial pieces. From the atrium you can see the city and the bullring just below.
