About Playa Los Algodones
Los Algodones lies north of San Carlos, in the bay that opens beyond the range. The name comes from the light sand dunes that, seen from a distance, resemble cotton. The beach is long and open, with the gulf’s sea generally calm and volcanic mountains in the background.
Visitors come to swim, paddle and wait for dusk, when the light reddens the mountains behind the sand. At the northern tip, rocks and the range form small coves.
Along the beach there are resorts and condominium developments, with public access to the sand. The beach is quieter on weekdays, and in winter it often receives visitors from Arizona and Canada who spend the season in the area.
