About Center of Comala
Comala’s center revolves around the plaza, with a garden, palm trees, and a bandstand, surrounded by white houses with red-tile roofs and arcades. The parish of San Miguel Arcángel, white like the rest of the village, sits on one side of the plaza, and on clear days the volcanoes appear behind its towers.
Under the arcades, restaurants serve drinks with small plates — the local botanas — and there are bakeries and coffee shops selling regional products. In the plaza there is a sculpture of Juan Rulfo seated on a bench, recalling the novel Pedro Páramo, which is set in an imaginary Comala.
In the surroundings, the old Hacienda de Nogueras houses a museum with works by the artist Alejandro Rangel Hidalgo.
