About La Campana Archaeological Zone
La Campana is inside Colima’s urban area, about 3 km north of the city center. It was a ceremonial center occupied for several centuries, reaching its peak between the years 700 and 900, by peoples of the Western Mexico shaft-tomb tradition.
The site has platforms, courtyards, plazas and structures built with rounded river stone, as well as shaft tombs, underground chambers where the dead were buried with ceramic offerings, such as Colima’s well-known clay dogs. The buildings are aligned with Volcano de Fuego, which can be seen to the north on clear days.
The route is walked on foot, along paths between the structures and the lawns.
