About Plaza de la Patria and Cathedral of Aguascalientes
Plaza de la Patria is Aguascalientes’ historic center. In the middle stands the Exedra, a column topped by an eagle, surrounded by gardens and fountains, and around it are the city’s main buildings.
The basilica cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, from the 18th century, has a baroque stone facade, towers and a dome and, inside, paintings by the colonial artist Miguel Cabrera. Next door, the Government Palace was built in the 17th century as the residence of a wealthy family and features a red-stone facade and two courtyards with arcades; on its walls, murals by Chilean painter Osvaldo Barra Cunningham depict the state’s history and the Feria de San Marcos.
On the square are also the Teatro Morelos, where the 1914 Revolutionary Convention met, and the Municipal Palace.
